Murray Edwards College

Murray Edwards College occupies a garden site on Huntingdon Road in Cambridge, designed by Chamberlin Powell and Bon and completed in 1965 as New Hall, one of the university's three women's colleges. The college is organised around a series of open courts and covered colonnades — white brick residential ranges on pilotis surrounding lawns — with the library expressed as a cluster of concrete domes rising above the roofline of the main hall range. The domed forms, drawn from North African and Mediterranean precedent rather than the British institutional tradition, give the college an architectural character unlike any other in Cambridge.
